American Sign Language I is an introduction to American Sign Language (ASL). This course is designed for the development of American Sign Language expressive and receptive skills, grammar, vocabulary, cultural awareness, and related terminology. Includes basic grammar, vocabulary, finger-spelling, numbers, and cultural information related to the Deaf Community.

ASL 1121 American Sign Language I
Exposes the student to American Sign Language. Readiness activities are conducted focusing on visual/receptive skills and basic communication. Utilizes the direct experience method. Students must complete this course with a "B" or higher or pass the ASL proficiency test with a score of at least 80% or better prior to registering for ASL 1122 if planning to enroll in the Interpreter Preparation Program. Note: This course was previously listed as ASL 121. It is required that students take ASL 1121 and ASL 1122 in consecutive semesters.

ASL 1122 American Sign Language II
Develops a basic syntactic knowledge of American Sign Language (ASL), basic vocabulary and basic conversational skills. Incorporates vital aspects of deaf culture and community. The direct experience method is used to enhance the learning process. Students must complete this course with a "B" or higher or pass the ASL 1121 proficiency test with a score of 80% or better prior to acceptance into the Interpreting and Transliterating Preparation program. (NOT OFFERED AT ACC). Note: This course was previously listed as ASL 122.

ASL 1123 American Sign Language III
Provides the student an opportunity to develop a stronger grasp of American Sign Language (ASL), as well as the cultural features of the language. ASL vocabulary is also increased. The direct experience method is used to further enhance the learning process. This course is a continuation of ASL 1122 with more emphasis on expressive skills in signing. Note: This course was previously listed as ASL 123. It is required that students take ASL 1123 and ASL 1124 in consecutive semesters.

ASL 1124 Intermediate American Sign Language
Strengthens foundational ASL receptive and expressive skills in American Sign Language (ASL) by enhancing the student's ability to comprehend and express lexical, grammatical and syntactical principles at an intermediate level. Conversational skills will be developed incorporating appropriate use of cultural discourse markers. Specific attention will be given to the spatial nature of the language. This course is a prerequisite for Advanced ASL 1, in the coordinated AGS/BA degree in ASL-English Interpretation. Note: This course was previously listed as ASL 124. It is required that students take ASL 1123 and ASL 1124 in consecutive semesters.
