Spanish I - 95600
Spanish I is a beginning level accelerated course that prepares students to speak, read, write and listen in the language and introduces them to another culture. Students will study simple grammar structure, which includes verb conjugations, gender of nouns, adjective use and sentence structure and be able to communicate on simple, everyday topics. They will be assessed on speaking, writing, listening and reading skills.

In Spanish II, students continue learning verb tenses and more complicated grammatical constructions, as well as much more vocabulary and culture. They learn to create more complex sentences, ask original questions and add more detail and elaboration to their speaking and writing skills, becoming more conversational and comfortable in the language. They are assessed on speaking, writing, listening and reading skills.

In level IV, classes are conducted almost entirely in Spanish. The students work on improving their fluency speaking, reading, writing and listening. Through the analysis of various cultural materials, this course will take a deep dive into the varying identities of Heritage Spanish speakers and the influence of language on these identities. Students will read various forms of literature, including short stories, poems, newspapers, magazines and novels in order to further develop their analytical skills. Common errors in spelling, accents, and various grammatical concepts will be covered in class. Students will also be able to expand their writing, speaking and researching skills through writing essays, poems and autobiographies.

AP Spanish Literature and Culture - 95685
Advanced Placement Spanish Literature classes offer students the equivalent of a third-year college introduction to literature in Spanish covering selected works from various Spanish-speaking authors. These courses offer students a weighted credit. Students learn to critically analyze the form and content of literary works (including poetry) orally and in writing using appropriate terminology. These courses are designed to prepare the students for the Advanced Placement Literature exam, which is given in May. Students generally reach language proficiency, which is equivalent to that of college students who have completed a fifth or sixth semester of Spanish in composition, conversation and grammar.
